It looks like the Government Hand-Out Sweepstakes might pass in the Senate, after three so-called conservative senators spent time hammering out a deal with the Democrats.
Here's Republican Senator Arlen Specter in the Washington Post, explaining why he wants to blow $780 billion dollars. The article is a full page, but all you really need ìs the first line:
I am supporting the economic stimulus package for one simple reason: The country cannot afford not to take action.
Bingo. Gotta love politicians. The country cannot afford not to take action.
Au contraire, Senator. Left to itself, the country can afford to do lots of things. That`s up to the citizens of the country. The government, on the other hand, is a different matter entirely. Specter, of course, has been in the Senate so long that he no longer thinks there`s a difference between government and country. Imagine the conceit the man must have to unconsciously call his merry band of 100 senators the country.
While I`m quoting politicians, I might as well throw Reagan into the mix. This was the truest thing a politician ever said: "The nine most dangerous words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"
