I notice The Independent decided to fire another "we're better than you" headline at the United States.
On the new cover they have the words: United States of America: 2008. THE GREAT DEPRESSION. Beneath it, they show a soup kitchen line-up in New York.
Perhaps it's a case of misery loving company, since The Independent should be worrying about their own backyard.
I have a better headline: England 2008 - The Great Implosion.
The latest story of whacky justice in the UK has a criminal being released less than halfway through his sentence due to overcrowded jails. His crime? Not much. He only smuggled missile blueprints into the country.
Since last summer, 20 000 inmates have been released onto England's streets in the "end of custody license" deal. The Telegraph reports that 3400 of them were violent offenders. 367 crimes have since been committed by the released crooks, with one murder to top it off.
Depressing.
